I AM A PICKER OF PIECES GRINDING THE HARDEST EDGE TO SMOOTH NEVER NEEDING A REASON FINDING THE BALANCE IN UNBALANCED. AND THERE IS A PEACE THAT I’VE FOUND IN THE CHAOS THAT SURROUNDS YOU AND I. YOU ARE A CURVED LINE THAT MAKES A FLOWER. IN YOUR BOOK OF LIFELINES AND POETRY YOU FLOAT SWEETLY THROUGH THE SUNLIGHT, NEEDING ONLY MY MELODY AND THERE IS A SPACE I HAVE FOUND IN THIS PLACE TO KEEP YOU AND I. NEATLY FOLDED IN THE CORNER I CRAWL OUT WHEN THEY’RE ALL ASLEEP TAKING PICTURES IN THE DARKNESS MINE AND MINE ONLY THEY’RE MINE TO KEEP BUT YOU KEEP IT ALL TOGETHER LIKE THE BRICKS AND MORTAR THAT WE ARE.

FLOATING DEBRIS COUNTING. YOUR MISTAKES. I’M TRYING TO FIX THEM. TRYING TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT A GIRL CAN ONLY HOLD ON TO THE FLOATING DEBRIS BEFORE THE COLD GETS HER. COUNTING. TO TEN IS SUCH A USELESS WAY . TO WASTE YOUR BREATH TRY SAYING SORRY. THERE. IT’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH. THE FLOATING’S GETTING ME DOWN. PICKING UP ALL YOUR PIECES TRYING TO ARRANGE YOU BECAUSE YOU ASKED ME TO TRYING MY BEST TO FEED YOU YOUR APPETITE WON’T KEEP YOU FROM FLOATING AWAY.

1985 AND SHE TALKED ABOUT A PHOTO I’VE LONG SINCE TRIED TO FORGET. RED FACED, MISSING TEETH, AND SUN DRENCHED I’M NOT SURE I COULD EVEN THINK AT THAT AGE. TO PICTURE IT NOW BRINGS THE LUMP BACK TO MY THROAT. MADE UP MEMORIES JUST SO YOU COULD SMILE GROWING UP I HAD NO CHOICE JUST TO ACCEPT YOU AS YOU WERE. TO THE POINT , NO ROOM FOR LOVE I NEEDED SOMETHING MORE AND YOU FAKED IT FOR THE ROOM WHEN ALL EYES WERE ON US AND TOSSED ASIDE WITH GALANT PRIDE IT WA SO EASY FOR YOU I LOOKED UP TO HER AND NOT TO YOU I’ M SO SORRY FOR WHATEVER I DID I DON’T BEAT MYSELF UP I WAS JUST A KID. I’D LIKE TO THINK SOMEWHERE DEEP DOWN THERE WAS SOME KIND OF LOVE TOO SCREWED UP T SHOWOR EVEN KNOW HOW IT SHOULD COME OUT I DON’T FEEL BITTER I DON’T FEEL HATE I DON’T FEEL ANYTHING AT ALL NOT WASTED YEARS OR PILLOW TEARS IT MADE ME LOVE HER MORE. THE YEARS HAVE PASSED AND I’VE COME TO LOOK AT YOU WITH LOVE. FOR A MAN THAT STOOD SO SMALL I HAVE COME TO LOVE. I MAY NOT UNDERSTAND IT , DON’T THINK I EVER WILL BUT I BELIEVE YOU DID YOUR BEST AND YOUR BEST IS ALL YOU DID.

about

"Bricks & Mortar", the debut release from Irish songbird Jean Harnett is
equal parts "Mississippi Delta" blended with the wilds of West Ireland.
This honest, thoughtful, and powerful EP will stir up comparisons to Damien Rice, Alison Krauss, and Glen Hansard, while having a 'familiar' and distinct sound all its own. With this record, Jean deftly navigates the waters of complex subject matter (relationships, family, and growing up) with impassioned storytelling, haunting melody, and a swagger that transcends her tender age.
